The Royal Adelaide was a 1400 ton steel sailing ship built in Bristol in 1865. She was caught in a storm on the 25th of November 1872 in Lyme Bay en route to Australia. Her anchors dragged, and she was unable to save herself from being run aground on the beach. Of the 67 people onboard, all but 7 were saved and brought ashore. However, her cargo that included gin and brandy, killed another 4 spectators that night who'd became intoxicated and died of exposure.
The wreck lies about 100m from the shore with parts of the wreckage standing 3-4m proud of the seabed.
