Well, this is going to be particularly short. The day was lovely, blue skies, calm seas, warm weather, everything going well. Off we went to Freshwater Bay just around the corner from the Needles on the Isle of Wight. Just before the bay is the wreck of the War Knight.

Despite the echo sounder / fish wreck finder being on the blink, Dr. Pooley decided he can find the wreck from memorised transits. He makes 2 passes then orders the shot to be chucked over the side.

Myself and Adrian kit up and jump over the side. Off we go down the shot and guess what?? It's on the boilers!! The ol' Pooley nav is spot on! The bad news......

the vis is pants! We saw the boiler when we landed on top of it. The shot actually went perfectly down the side of the boiler. I started after it to make sure that it wasn't tangled up, but it got too dark and murky and I'm a chicken at heart.

The kinks in the dive profile below actually divide the dive up nicely. There's:

  1. Oooh it's getting dark
  2. Is that metal? Am I going to impale myself? I'd better slow down a bit. It's the boilers!
  3. I'd better go down and free up the shot. Wow it's murky. Am I going into the wreck? Can I go into this wreck? Hang on a sec, where's Adrian? I'll just go up a bit to have a look.
  4. Ah, here's Adrian on top of the boiler. Yeah, it is pants. I'm just going down to free up the shot, are you coming?
  5. repeat point 3 above
  6. Yeah it's still crap. No I don't really want to stay down here. I'm right behind you.

That was it, not very good but the season is still young.

One thing I thought I should point out, that's not an exceedingly fast ascent from 3 metres to the surface, I don't know what it is. I can only guess that my Suunto got annoyed that I skipped the 3 minutes at 6 metres stop and refused to log the rest. Who knows, better luck next time.
