On 23 November 1898, the 38 ton british steam barge Ceres was engaged in loading shingle from the beach at Hurst. Caught out by a South West force 7 gale, the vessel ran aground and became a total loss.

This 55m long wreck is belived to be that of the iron build Ceres steamer, but has yet to be positively identified.
This wreck is easy to find as the New Forest National Park Authority have attached a permanent buoy to the wreck as part of their Underwater Heritage Trail.
